A ruby and diamond ring was the top seller at a recent jewelry sale at Phillips in Hong Kong, leading a selection of colored diamonds and gemstones to fetch HKD 9.9 million ($1.3 million).
The piece, which included an oval, 7.02-carat Burmese ruby within an oval-diamond surround, fell within its presale price range, Phillips said last week. In total, the October 3 Hong Kong Jewels Auction garnered HKD 51 million ($6.6 million), with 76% of lots finding buyers amid strong bidding.
“Phillips Jewels is experiencing an extraordinary period of growth,” said Benoît Repellin, worldwide head of jewelry. “Following a 191% year-on-year increase in global sales for the first half of 2024, we achieved an outstanding 89% year-on-year increase for this season’s jewels auction in Hong Kong. Notably, 35% of sold lots exceeded their presale high estimates, and 15 lots achieved more than double their presale low estimates. Collectors actively participated in all areas of the sale, paying strong prices for rare colored gemstones and signed pieces.”
