The top four lots offered at the most recent Sotheby’s Hong Kong jewelry sale failed to find buyers, with the total auction generating only HKD 86.2 million ($11.1 million).
A necklace composed of 108 jadeite beads and a clasp set with a cabochon ruby and brilliant-cut diamonds, estimated at HKD 50 million ($6.4 million), was set to headline the October 2 Magnificent Jewels sale in Hong Kong. However, that item, along with the second highlight, a ring with a round brilliant-cut, 67.20-carat, fancy-vivid-yellow, VVS2-clarity diamond center stone expected to fetch HKD 39 million ($5 million), were both withdrawn by their consignors, Sotheby’s said last week.
Meanwhile, a rivière necklace with 71 graduating emerald-cut, D-color, internally flawless and flawless diamonds weighing a total of 114.92 carats, and carrying a high price of HKD 30 million ($2.6 million), also went unsold. The same is true for the fourth item in the presale top 10: a ring featuring a step-cut, 22.83-carat Colombian emerald flanked by two trapeze-shaped diamonds, which was set to bring in as much as HKD 16.5 million ($2.1 million).
“While we didn’t get to see [those lots] sell in the room this season, they were both exceptional pieces in every sense, and attracted significant interest prior to the sale,” Sotheby’s told Rapaport News. “We are confident they will find a new home very soon.”
