Carat weight

Carat is the unit of weight for diamonds. One carat equals 0.2 grams. It is divided into 100 points. A stone of 0.50 carat is often called a fifty pointer. Larger diamonds are rarer than smaller ones. Price per carat therefore rises as weight increases, and it can jump sharply at key weight thresholds such as one carat.
