“The use of specific terminology in the industry has been long debated. What to call synthetic diamonds was so hotly contested it has spurred several lawsuits. The discussion over previously used metals is no different. There are many in the trade who use the word ‘recycled’ as a way to draw in customers and appeal to their desire to support sustainable brands. However, others argue that recycled should not refer to gold from old jewelry that has been melted down and reused, but rather to products diverted from waste, such as electronics and dental fillings, which was its original intention. This article shares why Signet, one of the largest jewelry companies, has chosen to rename its products made with previously used gold as ‘repurposed,’ and emphasizes the need for industry-wide terminology that will create more understanding and transparency with customers.”
