Gübelin Gem Lab has debuted a new lab in Bangkok, Thailand, which will offer a full range of services, with a focus on its recently introduced Gem Passports.

The company opened the new space in Bangkok due to its importance as a hub for the colored-gemstone industry, it said Friday. The expansion is the result of a growing need in the trade for gem-testing services.

The lab will spotlight Gübelin’s new Gem Passport grading and documentation service, which is available for unmounted rubies, blue sapphires and emeralds up to 3 carats. The service uses artificial intelligence (AI) to run an evaluation of the stone, checking for species and variety, country of origin and treatment status, the company explained.

The new space will be housed in Bangkok’s Jewelry Trade Center Building. It joins Gübelin’s three other permanent locations in Lucerne, Switzerland; Hong Kong; and New York.

“As one of the most vibrant centers for gemstone trade, Bangkok is an ideal location for the Gübelin Gem Lab to offer its services,” said Rapahel Gübelin, president of the House of Gübelin.
