Counterfeit diamonds will be the topic of Rapaport’s next GemTalks episode, which will focus on how to avoid being duped by fake inscriptions.
Dr. Wuyi Wang, vice president for research and development at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), will join Rapaport’s Joshua Freedman to discuss why this type of fraud is becoming more common and how members of the trade can strengthen their awareness of the threat. Dr. Wang will also explain how technology — including the GIA’s Match iD device — can help verify that a GIA-graded diamond is genuine.
“How to Verify a GIA-Graded Diamond” will take place on September 10, 2024, at 10 a.m. EDT.
The conversation follows a string of cases in which fraudsters have cut synthetic diamonds to match the size and specifications of a natural diamond with a GIA grading report. They have then forged the relevant GIA report number for the natural diamond onto the girdle of the synthetic stone, aiming to trick buyers.
This live session on LinkedIn will start with a presentation by Dr. Wang and will include an opportunity for the audience to ask questions.
