Edward Asscher, vice chairman of the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC), has announced his candidacy for another term.
Asscher, who has served in the role for the past four years, made the announcement last week.
In a letter to the trade group’s members, Asscher emphasized that the diamond and jewelry industry was facing “greater commercial challenges” than before.
“I continue to argue that we need to improve the reputation of our industries in the widest sense,” he said. “We do this with transparency and communication by the RJC. Under the enthusiastic leadership of [executive director] Purvi Shah, we must continue our efforts to streamline the organization, make our governance more transparent, and our standards more easily understood and implemented.”
In 2024, Asscher was a nominee for the chairman position. However, he ultimately lost the vote to Richline CEO Dave Meleski and remained vice chairman.
Though Asscher retired in 2020 after five decades at the helm of family-run business Royal Asscher Diamonds, he remains the company’s non-executive chairman. He is also a former head of the World Diamond Council (WDC).
