Diamond Ring Sold Without Reserve Falls Short at Sotheby’s

Sotheby's Important Jewels pink and green diamond ring

A pink and green diamond ring failed to reach even a quarter of its low estimate after being offered without reserve at the most recent Sotheby’s sale in New York.

The crossover design set with a fancy-deep-greyish-yellowish-green diamond of 1.78 carats and a fancy-green diamond weighing 1.64 carats went for $82,550, missing its $350,000 to $550,000 presale estimate. The ring, which also included a combined 1.31 carats of white diamonds and pinks totaling 1.01 carats, had no minimum price at the March 8 Important Jewels auction, Sotheby’s said Thursday.

Three other rings offered without reserve also disappointed. A ring by designer Valentin Magro featuring a cushion-cut, 1.01-carat, fancy-intense-green diamond flanked by two cushion-cut, orange-yellow diamonds brought in $69,850. It had a presale price range of $150,000 to $250,000. A ring with an oval-shaped, 8.13-carat padparadscha sapphire, framed by 1.57-carats of pear-shaped diamonds, sold for $44,450, against an estimate of $80,000 to $120,000. Meanwhile, a cushion-cut, 12.28-carat padparadscha sapphire and diamond ring fetched $35,560, missing its $75,000 low estimate.

However, a 2.61-carat, fancy-light-pink diamond and emerald ring realized more than 11 times its high estimate following a bidding war between three buyers. The final price of $711,200 compared with a presale upper price tag of $60,000 (pictured below).

In total, the auction garnered $11.8 million, with 87% of goods on offer finding buyers.
