The Magic of Lucky-Charm Jewelry

Designs sporting four-leaf clovers, horseshoes and inspiring mantras serve as protective talismans for consumers seeking comfort.

Don’t try to tell New York jeweler Ali Weiss that lucky charms are a trend in jewelry right now; she isn’t having it.

“I wouldn’t describe it as an uptick; there is a consistent demand for these pieces,” says Weiss, who describes fans of her brand as being reflective types.

Weiss herself finds solace in protective symbols such as the evil eye and the hamsa hand, saying they offer her a sense of “security in comfort” — particularly in troubling times, which seem to find us all
for myriad reasons.

Many brands at the most recent Las Vegas shows continued to incorporate signs of luck and fortune into new collections. One of the standout designs was from French label Rubinski: a gold, ruby and diamond Fortuna hologram pendant featuring a four-leaf clover made of hearts, and the words “love” and “luck” in bright green or red.

“In uncertain times, individuals seek comfort and reassurance, and jewelry that symbolizes luck and protection provides a tangible sense of hope and positivity,” remarks Joy Haugaard, the designer behind New York-based brand Lionheart, which offers clients the chance to personalize their lucky charms — a key trend in 2024.

Other updates include the addition of colored gemstones and choice phrases, as in Retrouvai’s Talisman collection, which features phrases such as “A new dawn a new day” and “Growth not perfection” engraved into gold.

Another symbol that seekers of protection have long cherished is the horseshoe. This one is enjoying a double resurgence in jewelry thanks to the cowboy-core fashion trend and country music revival, which have the next generation reaching for cowboy boots, double denim, and whisky.

“The horseshoe’s lucky properties date back to ancient times, where it was thought to ward off evil spirits and bring good fortune,” says Karina Brez, a jeweler who has dedicated her brand to equestrian styling. “Its open ends are traditionally worn facing upward to ensure luck is contained and does not spill out, a small but significant detail that speaks to the depth of its cultural resonance.”

Also on trend are more obscure lucky symbols that require interpretation, such as ParkFord’s moonstone and diamond Cloud charm. “In 2024, I think we want even more uniqueness, and so the motifs are evolving,” says ParkFord designer Jeanette Ford. “Our charm symbolizes abundance. As a harbinger of rain, it represents the promise of prosperity, reminding you that after every storm, new growth and spring blooms are ahead.”

This is a perfect sentiment for anyone weathering a storm right now — be it political, personal, economic or environmental.
