RAPAPORT… This month, Rapaport’s Guide to Fancy Shapes, a comprehensive series that provides an in-depth analysis of fancy shape diamonds, examines the Calla™ Cut diamond. Rapaport Diamond Report has carefully researched the shape to supply information on the optimum cut, price information and market demand, as well as what to look for — and avoid — when buying this diamond shape.
After two years of development, Nelson Ho introduced the Calla™ Cut diamond at the 2005 JCK Las Vegas show. The patented and trademarked diamond was inspired by the natural outline of the calla lily flower. The shape has the added plus of enhancing the return of light in the form of scintillation.
PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS AND CUTTING ISSUES
A combination of the round and the princess cuts, the Calla Cut has optimal vibrancy and brilliancy, thanks to the patented location and size of its 57 brilliant-type facets. It does not lose light or brilliance through the bow tie, which can happen in a marquise or pear shape.
The Calla Cut diamond is H or better in color and VS2 or better in clarity. It ranges in size from .03 to .50 carats. It is mainly used as an accent stone for mounting on the company’s Calla Collection signature branded bridal line. All of the engagement rings have identifying logos, serial number and laser inscriptions and come with warranty certificates.
MARKETS AND MARKETING
There are currently 100 authorized dealer locations of the Calla line in the U.S. market. The company targets high-end retailers. Authorized dealers have exclusivity within their territories.
The Calla Collection is advertised in major bridal and fashion magazines, including Elle, Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Glamour and Bridal Guide magazines. A variety of marketing materials are provided to retailers, including counter displays, light boxes and catalogs. There is a website, www.callacut.com.
PRICE AND SUPPLY
There are no supply issues and the price ranges from $500 to $40,000; typically, the engagement rings or mountings retail for $4,500.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR
The four Calla Cut diamonds form a beautiful butterfly design, which symbolizes the natural union of a butterfly with the calla lily, adding a special appeal to the bridal line.
