Gempedia, the Ultimate Gemological Glossary

This collection of every industry term a gemologist could ever need is a useful resource for beginners and scholars alike.

Gempedia is a collection of more than 7,300 terms and definitions gathered over decades by Rui Galopim de Carvalho. A renowned professional gemologist and consultant with more than 30 years of experience in gem testing, education and science communication within the gem and jewelry trade, the author has created a reference glossary.

The book is organized to ensure that all the gemological terms and definitions a gemologist will encounter in their career are easy to find. For instance, under the term “feldspathoid” you will find “felsic,” and then felsic rock, and so on.

The 719-page tome is designed as the ideal companion for a gemologist at any point in his or her career, whether for looking something up, studying for a gemologist exam, conversing with fellow gemologists, or writing an article about the field. The author hopes the glossary will be a useful tool in a gemologist’s everyday work life and might even contain new information, such as terms readers have not yet come across, broadening their knowledge of the field of gemology.

Gempedia has been endorsed and supported by multiple organizations, including the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A) and the Asian Institute of Gemological Sciences (AIGS). It is “not only a ‘go to’ guide for gemology, but one that can be entirely read and browsed to increase your own knowledge,” according to Alan Hart, former CEO of Gem-A.
