Jewelers of America Relaunches Bench Certification Program

May 14, 2023  |  Anthony DeMarco

Jewelers of America (JA) is rolling out a reworked version of its bench professional certification program, which sets standards for artisans across the industry.

The new program provides three levels of certification: JA certified beginner bench jeweler (CBBJ) for bench jeweler generalists with about one year of experience; certified bench jeweler (CBJ), for those with two or more years of experience; and certified master bench jeweler (CMBJ), for bench jewelers who demonstrate a mastery of all bench skills.

“We have an opportunity to better serve our jewelers by providing certification opportunities that demonstrate competencies while serving as a platform to improve consumer confidence,” JA president and CEO David Bonaparte said Wednesday.

Certification requires passing a written exam as well as a practical test of proficiency in a variety of tasks set to national standards. Candidates may use whatever tools and technology they have to complete the projects and may take the tests at their own bench using their own equipment, or at a location of their choice.
