What Millennials Really Think of Lab-Grown Diamonds

Many believe today’s generation is not enamored of diamonds as previous ones and research suggests they are more likely to opt for synthetic if they do decide to buy. But is this really true?

How would you feel if someone proposed to you with a synthetic diamond?

I wouldn’t be happy.

How important is it to know for sure whether a diamond you receive is natural, and why?

It’s important, because when you buy a diamond, especially an engagement ring, you want the real thing. It’s a special day, and you’re showing the person you love how precious and rare and beautiful they are to you, just like the diamond. It is something that you are willing to invest in, both with the ring and by spending your lives together.

How important is it to know for sure whether a diamond you give is natural, and why?

I feel it to be of little consequence. What matters to me the most is that the recipient enjoys the gem based on their own appreciation of its appearance. After all, the story of a diamond gift that truly matters doesn’t begin with its chemical origins, but with the sentiment that lies in the gesture of the gift itself.

How would you feel if someone proposed to you with a synthetic diamond?

I wouldn’t mind if the ring was synthetic or natural. To me, they both look the same and have the same meaning.

Why?

I’m not big into material things, so I’ve never really thought about it before. To me, a diamond is a diamond.

How would you feel if someone proposed to you with a synthetic diamond?

I think I would be disappointed if I didn’t know it was synthetic and found out later down the line. Maybe it’s the tradition of being proposed to with a real diamond, or my own personal desire to have a vintage engagement ring that would make me want a real stone. I think every girl dreams of getting proposed to with a nice quality diamond.

I don’t know enough about synthetic diamonds to know if it is much more cost-effective for the type of person who wants a big rock, but I’m much more of a quality-over-quantity kinda girl.

How important is it to know for sure that a diamond you receive is natural?

I think there is such a stigma around whether you’ve received a real diamond that it would be important to know.

Again, I think I’d feel cheated if I found out later it maybe wasn’t as valuable. I like the idea of a diamond coming from the earth, not a lab. For fun jewelry, or, say, a pair of earrings, I wouldn’t care as much.

Would you consider proposing with a synthetic diamond, and why?

No, I would not use a synthetic diamond. I think if you are going to propose to the person you love, committing yourself to them forever, you should be using the real thing.

How important is it to know for sure that a diamond you give is natural?

Very important. A gift is something that is genuine, not something synthetic.
