The Hottest Gemstone Sizes and Cuts

Buyers increasingly want unconventional fancies, according to dealers.

Gemstones in the 2- to 5-carat range are having a moment. According to leading dealers, this size bracket is emerging as the sweet spot for buyers.

“This is the perfect size for gemstone buyers, offering a balance between visual impact and wearability,” says Alexandra Floyd, sales manager at Gemstock.org. Meanwhile, stones over 8 carats perform well for statement pieces, with collectors particularly keen on getting their hands on exceptional gems over 10 carats.

Gem dealer Constantin Wild has seen high demand for traditional cuts like ovals, cushions and octagons, as “they are timeless, unlike any fancy cuts which might experience a hype but then quickly look out of vogue.”

Jeremy Chalchinsky has noticed an increased interest in marquise and pear shapes, but is cautious about less-classic cuts. “Fancy shapes such as kites and hexagons are on the rise and have been for the past few years, but it’s something that I’m wary about making a significant investment in,” says the director of sales at Color Source Gems.

However, Eric Braunwart, president and CEO of Columbia Gem House, sees colored gems in kite and triangle shapes as an enticing opportunity for designers. Cuts with points are not mainstream for diamonds, he explains, while colored stones enable designers to feature these unusual shapes as a signature style.

Precision and fancy cuts in smaller gems — including kites, hexagons and asymmetrical styles — are especially suitable for custom designs, adds gemology consultant Erica Silverglide, founder of GemologyGeek.

And Anup Jogani of dealer Jogani has seen a “significant resurgence” of antique styles and cuts that highlight the natural beauty of the gems.

“Antique cushions and step cuts are particularly sought after,” he reports, as they add “a timeless, unique character to the stones while preserving their inherent charm.”
