Are Couples Taking Cues from Celebrity Engagement Rings?

Jewelers weigh in on whether social media posts from Hollywood stars and influencers have a true impact on the sales floor.

When it comes to choosing an engagement ring, the influence of celebrities is undeniable.

“One of the clearest examples has been the rise in popularity of oval engagement rings, which is loosely attributed to the oval diamond that Blake Lively received from Ryan Reynolds in 2012,” says Sarah Hanlon, lifestyle editor for wedding resource The Knot. Since the Hollywood power couple’s proposal, oval shapes have surged by 23%, now accounting for a quarter of all engagement rings.

The royal icons of years past have given way to digital stars for today’s consumers. Jewelry and luxury content creator Julia Hackman Chafé often conducts polls on the streets of New York to gauge the public’s taste.

“Celebrity engagement rings play a huge role in consumer decisions,” she says. “While consumers may not all look to [the UK’s] Princess Diana for engagement ring inspo in 2025, they’re most certainly looking to their favorite influencers. The oval trend was locked into the market by [model and entrepreneur] Hailey Bieber, for example.”

Still, it’s not a straightforward matter of celebrities dictating tastes. “Celebrity engagement rings have a big influence on trends, but ultimately clients have their personal style and preferences for wearability,” explains Los Angeles jeweler Corey Anthony Jones, founder of Gaudy Atelier.

Echoing this sentiment is Anne Russell, executive vice president of Hamilton Jewelers in Princeton, New Jersey, who says her clients “tend to be less influenced by celebrities and trends and more focused on classic silhouettes that will always be in style” — even if they arrive with Pinterest boards brimming with inspiration.

Social media and celebrity influence do drive awareness and aspiration, but they’re not the deciding factor, says Trish Carruth, founder and lead designer of Your Personal Jeweler in Royal Oak, Michigan. “Clients regularly bring in TikToks or celebrity proposals and say, ‘Can we do something like this…but make it mine?’ Social media sets the mood, but it doesn’t always close the sale. What really seals the deal is: Will I love this every time I look at it?”
