For Retailers, It’s Hard to Overstate the Magic of the Holiday Season
- The holiday shopping period from October to December can represent up to 60% of a jeweler’s annual sales.
- Christmas Day is the most popular day for engagements, surpassing Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day combined in sales impact.
- Retailers emphasize the holidays as a key time to connect with customers and highlight jewelry’s lasting emotional value.
Every year, the jewelry industry looks to the December holiday season with a sense of anticipation, and for good reason. December is the single most popular month for proposals, according to wedding website The Knot. Christmas Day is the most popular day of the year to get engaged, with Christmas Eve close behind. Those milestones create an important opportunity for jewelers, but engagement rings are only part of the story.
Jewelry, as a whole, is the highest-value gift category during the holiday shopping season, which spans October through December. For many retailers, those three months can account for as much as 60% of annual sales, making the final quarter not just important, but essential. A strong holiday season can set the tone for the year ahead, while a disappointing one can be difficult to recover from.
I was reminded of just how significant the holidays were when I recently called several jewelers while researching a story about seasonal sales. I asked them to compare the industry’s “big three” gift-giving occasions: Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and Christmas. One retailer laughed at the question.
“Valentine’s Day?” he said. “Valentine’s doesn’t exist here.”
He explained that Christmas generated more than three times the sales of Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day combined. I was genuinely surprised. Like many people, I had assumed Valentine’s Day was a major jewelry-buying occasion, with couples shopping for romantic gifts, while Christmas was simply a broader retail event. Yet retailer after retailer echoed the same message: Nothing comes close to the holiday season. It’s when families celebrate together, when milestones are marked, and when people are most willing to invest in meaningful gifts that will last a lifetime.
The holidays are, above all, a time for family, reflection and gratitude. For our industry, they are also a time of opportunity. They bring a chance to reconnect with customers, tell the stories behind our products, and remind consumers that jewelry is more than a purchase – it is a lasting symbol of love, celebration and memory.
The industry could certainly use a strong finish to the year. With a little creativity, renewed consumer confidence, and perhaps a touch of holiday magic, we can make customers say “yes” to our proposals, just as they hope their significant others will say “yes” to theirs.
