This February, I’ll be celebrating 10 years of marriage. When I proposed, I gave my wife a 1-carat-plus emerald ring. It wasn’t just any ring; there was a story behind it. Years earlier, when she was working as a model, she walked a fashion show for Brazilian luxury jeweler H. Stern. Among all the pieces she wore, there was one emerald ring that completely captivated her. She loved it so much, she posted about it on Instagram, and friends thought she had secretly gotten engaged.
Years later, when I really did plan to propose, I had a jeweler design something in that same spirit. She said yes — to me, and to the emerald.
Every engagement ring has a story like this behind it. It’s never just about the proposal itself. It’s also about the journey of choosing the ring, the conversations with jewelers and loved ones, the excitement, and — more often than not — the nerves. I remember calling my jeweler friend to start planning the emerald engagement ring; before even saying hello, he said: “The moment has arrived. Come over before you change your mind.”
Buying an engagement ring is not just a transaction. It’s a core memory that forms part of your shared story. That’s why I believe natural diamonds play a special role. Lab-grown may have its place in the market, but an engagement ring should never feel like something you’ve picked up casually at Walmart or Costco. The symbolism and the process matter as much as the ring itself.
Today, we’re seeing new momentum around bridal jewelry, with cultural moments like Taylor Swift’s recent engagement bringing the conversation about meaningful rings back to the forefront. It’s a perfect time for the industry to reaffirm what makes engagement rings — and natural diamonds — so enduring.
