Note from the Publisher: New Beginnings

As I move on to other opportunities and challenges, I will still be engaged with our industry.

Rarely does a 48-year-old business have an opportunity to reinvent itself. But that is what is happening now at Rapaport.

I am delighted to introduce our new publisher, David Small, who will be taking this magazine and Rapaport Information Services to new heights. David is coming aboard at a time of great change and opportunity. New generations of people and technology are redefining what information is and how it is distributed. I thank our new CEO, Dan Mano, who has hired David for this important position.

It is appropriate that this issue of Rapaport Magazine is devoted to education and ethics. That is what Rapaport is all about. Education is the foundation of our business and yours. Understanding and explaining diamonds and jewelry is a lifelong process driven by passion and the desire to share knowledge with our customers.

The foundation of ethics is values. What we stand for and what we stand against. What we believe is right and what we believe is wrong. Our Rapaport values are the creation and maintenance of ethical, transparent, competitive and efficient markets. Those are the values that have sustained us for the past 48 years and will sustain us in the future. The world around us changes constantly, but our values do not change.

As I move on to greater challenges involving national security and the survival of the Jewish people, I take this opportunity to sincerely thank all those who have made our unique Rapaport business possible and profitable. Our wonderful people — many of whom have been with us for 20 to 30 years — and our customers, who have given us the greatest gift of all: their trust.

While it’s wonderful to move on to new opportunities and challenges, I will still be engaged with our industry in a high-level advisory capacity, and I will be actively providing thought leadership on social media and other platforms. I love the diamond trade and its people, so I will still be connected and connecting. I believe in the future of the diamond business, and most importantly, the idea behind diamonds: the great gift of commitment — to love your wife. That is what diamonds are all about.

And so I end this note with thanks to my wife of 45 years, Rivka. Through thick and thin, good times and not-so-good times, she has stood strong with me. I thank her for her support and commitment to everything we stand for. Rivka is the true diamond of my life.
