The latest episode of Rapaport’s GEMTalks focused on the how the jewelry industry can and should talk to consumers about natural and lab-grown diamonds.

Dr. Ulrika D’Haenens-Johansson, senior manager of diamond research at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), joined Rapaport’s Joshua Freedman to discuss the two products’ different formation stories.

The LinkedIn Live session, sponsored by the GIA, began with a presentation by Dr. D’Haenens-Johansson, who also answered the audience’s questions about mined and synthetic material. The discussion centered on the unique way in which diamonds form deep in the ground and how dealers and retailers can use this knowledge to communicate how they differ from synthetic stones.

Dr. D’Haenens-Johansson also explained how various observations about a stone can help build up a picture about its natural or lab-grown origin, as well as how technology enhances detection.
