The Rapaport Group has scheduled its next trade mission to Sierra Leone for May 4 to 9, 2025, underscoring its commitment to ethical diamond sourcing and sustainable economic development.
The initiative marks the fourth mission to the west African nation in the past two years, reflecting a sustained dedication to fostering responsible practices within the artisanal diamond-mining sector.
Once infamous for its civil war, which was partially funded by “blood diamonds,” Sierra Leone has now experienced 23 years of peace and democracy. As one of the world’s major diamond-producing nations, the country continues to diversify its economy and drive sustainable development.
The upcoming mission will provide an international delegation of diamond dealers, jewelers and industry leaders with an immersive and educational experience. Participants will have the opportunity to visit artisanal mining sites, engage directly with local miners, and tour the Peace Diamond Village, which showcases the investments that diamonds have made possible in healthcare, education and agriculture. Furthermore, participants are set to explore land reclamation projects and agricultural initiatives, as well as meeting with business leaders and government representatives in Freetown.
Past participants have described the mission as transformative.
“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see how diamonds are actually mined and how it impacts the lives of the miners and the entire community,” remarked previous delegate Rishil Savani.
Martin Rapaport, Chairman of the Rapaport Group, emphasized the mission’s deeper purpose, stating, “There’s a reason God gave diamonds to the poorest people in the world and made the richest people want them. Bridging that gap is tikkun olam — making the world a better place.”
Ezi Rapaport, CEO of Empower Africa, highlighted the impact of global engagement: “Sierra Leone is a country of immense beauty and resilience. It is inspiring to see leaders in the diamond industry dedicating their time, resources and expertise to understanding the realities on the ground and contributing to meaningful, lasting change.”
This mission represents a continued effort by the Rapaport Group to engage with and support the artisanal mining communities of Sierra Leone, promoting ethical practices and sustainable development within the diamond industry.
