A pair of earrings featuring yellow diamonds was the top seller at a Christie’s jewelry auction in Hong Kong, fetching HKD 62 million ($8 million).
Called The Oriental Sunrise, the set contains two oval mixed-cut, fancy-vivid-orange-yellow diamonds, one weighing 12.20 and the other 11.96 carats, as well as white diamonds. The final sale price fell within its presale range. In total, the October 29 Hong Kong Magnificent Jewels sale garnered HKD 466.8 million ($60.1 million), Christie’s said Wednesday.
Many items outside the top 10 lots sold for well above their estimates, including some that went for as much as double or trip their top price. Those included a pair of jadeite and diamond earrings, which brought in HKD 5.2 million ($664,860) against a high estimate of HKD 2.5 million ($321,748), and a diamond and ruby pendant necklace that surpassed its HKD 960,000 ($123,550) upper price to achieve HKD 2.3 million ($291,887).
However, a colored-diamond ring estimated to bring in up to HKD 80 million ($10 million) “was withdrawn due to a strategic decision made by our specialists to adjust the offerings for the sale,” said Ronny Hsu, head of jewelry sales at Christie’s Hong Kong. The piece contained a marquise brilliant-cut, 5.02-carat, fancy-deep-blue, internally flawless diamond center stone flanked by trilliant-cut white diamonds.
