A 49.91-carat diamond ring led the recent Stream Family Collection auction at Christie’s in New York, where it fetched $2 million.

The piece, from 1970, centers an old European brilliant-cut, very-light-green-yellow, VS1-clarity diamond in a marquise and round-diamond surround. The ring surpassed its $700,000 high estimate at the June 10 A Treasured History: The Stream Family Collection, Christie’s said Wednesday.

In total, the sale garnered $17.3 million, with 99% of lots on offer finding buyers. The auction included a Fabergé section, jewelry, paintings, antiques and porcelain. A Fabergé gem-set silver rhinoceros from 1920 sold for $762,000, beating its top price, and a Russian three-color gold cup from 1790 more than doubled its upper estimate to realize $1.2 million.

“The Stream Family Collection reflects the vision of two extraordinary women, Matilda Geddings Gray and Matilda Gray Stream, who surrounded themselves with objects of the highest caliber,” said Capera Ryan, deputy chairman at Christie’s.“Their commitment to excellence and their instinct for acquiring works of lasting significance have resulted in a collection that has only grown more rare and resonant with time.”
