RAPAPORT… A Bulgari sapphire and diamond ring is set to sell for up to $800,000 at the upcoming Bonhams New York Jewels sale.
The 48.38-carat Ceylon sapphire, set with diamond shoulders, will lead the December 6 auction, Bonhams said last week. A ring bearing a 5.39-carat Kashmir sapphire surrounded by diamonds will also go under the hammer. That piece carries a high estimate of $375,000.
“Sapphires are one of the most highly sought-after stones on the market,” said Caroline Morrissey, New York head of jewels for Bonhams. “This 48-carat example has wonderful proportions and amazing large vertical facets. The emerald cut brings out the beautiful soft blue color, and the Bulgari setting is elegant and fabulous. It is everything you want in an important stone.”
Other notable items include a round brilliant-cut, 12.40-carat, I-color, VVS2-clarity diamond ring with an upper valuation of $450,000. A ring with a cushion modified brilliant-cut, fancy-vivid-blue-green diamond framed by fancy-intense-pink and white diamonds has a high estimate of $240,000, and an 18.60-carat sapphire and diamond ring by Cartier is expected to bring in up to $220,000.
Meanwhile, Bonhams will also sell a collection of jewels from Tony-winning choreographer, dancer, singer and actress Ann Reinking, known for her roles in Bob Fosse’s Broadway production of Chicago and movie version of All That Jazz, as well in the 1982 film Annie. Included in that group are a diamond necklace that converts into bracelets, from Hammerman Brothers, and a Cartier ruby and diamond necklace. Ann Reinking wore both in publicity photos or to red-carpet events, Bonhams noted.
On December 2, Bonhams will hold its London Jewels sale. Highlights of that auction are a sapphire and diamond ring from 1920, with a high estimate of GBP 200,000 ($268,739), and a sapphire, diamond and natural-pearl pendant from the late 19th century. That piece has an upper valuation of GBP 85,000 ($114,249).
