Monnickendam Diamonds has hired Matthew Girling, an industry veteran with 45 years of experience in the jewelry business, as its chief of staff.
Girling qualified as a gemologist with the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A) while working for the crown jewelers, Garrard and Co., in 1982, Monnickendam said Tuesday. Over the years he worked in several auction houses, including Bonhams in 1988 and later at Christie’s in London and Geneva.
After rejoining Bonhams in 1996, he served as its global director of jewelry from 2000 to 2015, becoming global CEO in 2014. In 2016, The Times newspaper named him as one of the top five auctioneers in the world.
Since 2020, he has been an independent jewelry consultant, advising clients on buying, selling, and providing valuations.
“I am delighted to be joining Arthur Monnickendam and the team in London,” said Girling. “Monnickendam Diamonds has a storied history, having been established in the UK since 1890. Monnickendam now remains the only diamond cutters based in the UK. Arthur is the fifth generation of the family to run the business, and I am looking forward to working alongside him to help strategically develop the business for the future.
