Lesotho has launched a manufacturing association with the goal of keeping more diamond value within the country.

The Lesotho Diamond Manufacturers Association (LDMA), the first of its kind in the country, aims to elevate the region’s industry by creating a diamond hub, it said last week. The organization believes its establishment will drive local economic growth and international competitiveness, as well as ensure that more diamond value is kept within the country.

“Lesotho is home to some of the world’s most exquisite diamonds, but historically, much of the value from our natural resources has been realized outside of our borders,” said LDMA president Kobina Baffoe. “Our association is committed to changing this by fostering a vibrant diamond-manufacturing sector that creates jobs, develops local expertise, and positions Lesotho as a key player in the global diamond industry.”

LDMA plans to help promote local beneficiation, encourage the establishment of cutting and polishing facilities in Lesotho, and partner with educational institutions and international experts to provide training programs for locals to learn the trade, it explained. It will also collaborate with government bodies on ethical practices and compliance with international regulations, including the Kimberley Process. In addition, LDMA believes it will help position Lesotho as an attractive destination for investors.
