Gemological Science International (GSI) helped authorities recover stolen jewels in two separate instances using a registry it created for that purpose.
In the first case, a $22,000 diamond engagement ring purchased from a jewelry chain in Oregon with an accompanying GSI grading report was stolen during a move. Following the theft, the owner logged the report into GSI’s Lost & Stolen Jewelry Registry. When a third party subsequently accessed the report, it triggered an alert on the registry, GSI said last week. GSI then contacted the owners, advising them to notify the police, after which the ring was located and returned to the owners.
Meanwhile, in a second case, a prominent online auction marketplace contacted GSI requesting report information on two lab-grown diamond-jewelry pieces. The registry identified both items as reported missing from one of the stores of a major US jewelry retail chain. GSI contacted the company, which then spoke to law enforcement with the details.
“We are proud and happy to help reunite the jewelry with its lawful owners,” said GSI president and cofounder Debbie Azar.
