The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is redesigning its colored-gemstone reports and expanding the country-of-origin information the lab offers.
The institute already has origin-determination services for alexandrite, emerald, Paraíba tourmaline, ruby, sapphire, and red spinel. Now its reports will also show country of origin for peridot, opal, and demantoid garnet, as well as for untreated jadeite jade and omphacite jade from Burma or Guatemala, the institute said last week.
The new reports sport an updated design that “will highlight the most relevant gemological information, making it easy for the trade and consumers to grasp the unique characteristics that bring each gem’s story to life,” it added.
In addition, the GIA is also adjusting its weight categories and, accordingly, its fee structure for submitting stones.
“Our expanded services are based on the GIA’s extensive research and collection of 32,000 samples collected by GIA field gemologists,” said Shane McClure, global director of Colored Stone Services.
The updated services and reports will launch on January 1, 2026.
