Former De Beers executive Amit Pratihari has joined the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) as the new managing director of its India lab.
Pratihari succeeds Sriram Natarajan, whom the institute promoted to senior vice president of laboratory operations in August. In his new role, Pratihari will be responsible for all aspects of the company’s labs in Mumbai and Surat, as well as the GIA India school in Mumbai, it said last week.
Prior to his role with the GIA, Pratihari was managing director of De Beers India and Forevermark India, where he was active in expanding the brands in that country and the Middle East. He has over 20 years of experience in the industry, having worked in consumer-facing retail, brand management and company management.
Pratihari’s experience makes him “ideally suited to build on the success and importance of the GIA India laboratories,” said Natarajan. “His expertise in strategic growth and team leadership is especially relevant given India’s importance to the global diamond market and its emerging role as a key consumer market.”
The new hire began on October 1. He will report to the GIA India’s board of directors.
