Tom Moses, executive vice president and chief laboratory and research officer at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), will be leaving after almost five decades with the organization.

Moses has played a key role in the institute’s international expansion, helping transform GIA into a global leader in gemology and education, it said last week. He will remain in his position until the end of May to aid a smooth transition, after which he will be named chief of gemological research emeritus in recognition of his contributions.

“The rigor Tom brought to grading, the discipline he brought to science, the unwavering focus he brought to our customers and the humility he brought to leadership reflect the very best of what we aspire to be,” said GIA CEO Pritesh Patel. “Fifty years is not simply a measure of time — for GIA, it has been a period of remarkable growth driven by Tom’s commitment, curiosity and leadership.”

Moses joined GIA’s California laboratory in 1976 after earning his graduate gemologist diploma. Throughout his career, he has held several leadership roles at GIA and has coauthored more than 100 technical articles for GIA quarterly Gems & Gemology and other peer-reviewed journals. In 2002, he received the institute’s Richard T. Liddicoat Award for Distinguished Achievement, and in 2013 he was elected to its board of governors.
