Gem Legacy has appointed Bernadette Mack as its new executive director.
Mack has more than two decades of leadership experience in the nonprofit sector and jewelry industry, the organization said last week. Prior to joining Gem Legacy, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting vocational training, entrepreneurship, and community growth in east Africa’s artisanal-mining communities, she was the managing director of Mercury Free Mining (MFM). She has also served as executive director of the Women’s Jewelry Association.
In her new role, Mack will manage strategic planning, fundraising, industry partnership and the launch of Gem Legacy’s landmark campus in Tanzania. The new hire coincides with major growth at the organization, as it prepares to build its first permanent campus, a residential and educational hub for scholarship students. Its establishment will expand the Gem Faceting School, and create jobs and learning opportunities in gem and mining communities.
“[Mack] brings the right balance of heart, strategy, and industry insight to this role,” said Gem Legacy board member Monica Stephenson. “Her leadership will allow Gem Legacy to scale its impact while staying deeply rooted in its mission.”
