Fancy-Color Diamond Index Slips Slightly in First Quarter

Prices of fancy-color diamonds slid 0.9% year on year in the first quarter, according to the Fancy Color Research Foundation (FCRF).

The index dropped 0.2% compared to the previous quarter, following a slight 0.1% decrease in fourth quarter of 2025, the foundation reported last week.  The modest scale of change indicates the market remains stable, with no signs of sharp or broad-based price fluctuations, the FCRF added.

Yellow fancy-color diamonds recorded the largest year-on-year decline, down 1.2%, while the color saw no change compared to the previous three months. These diamonds grabbed three places on the top-climbers list for the period. Prices of fancy-intense-yellow diamonds weighing 1 carat rose 1.9%, 5-carat, fancy-vivid-yellows stones increased 1.8%, and 10-carat, fancy-vivid yellows inched up 1.1%. Meanwhile, fancy-yellow diamonds weighing 8 carats slipped 1.5%. The results highlight the importance of differentiation in the yellow-diamond segment, with size, saturation and overall quality continuing to influence pricing.

Pinks fell 0.8% year on year in the first three months of the year, dipping 0.3% versus the previous quarter. Fancy-intense-pinks weighing 1 carat topped the climbers list, with their prices advancing 1.9%. Meanwhile, pink stones occupied the first four places on the top-sliders list. Fancy-vivid-pink diamonds weighing 2 carats dropped 2.2% and those of the same hue weighing 5 carats fell 1.9%. These were followed by 3-carat fancy pinks at minus 1.7% and 3-carat, fancy-vivid pinks, down 1.5%.

Meanwhile, prices for blue fancy-colored stones slipped 0.5% year on year and grew 0.3% compared to the fourth quarter of 2025. Blues were among the top-five climbers, with 1-carat fancy blues improving 1.3%.

“We’re continuing to see a very selective market,” said Ephraim Zion, founder and managing director of Dehres. “Clients are taking their time and focusing on stones that really stand out, particularly those with strong color and rarity. While overall pricing has been relatively steady, the difference between top-quality stones and more commercial goods feels more prominent than before.”

Since the FCRF began collecting data in 2005, pink diamonds have advanced 389%, blue diamonds have grown 241% and yellows have gained 48%, it said.
