Diarough and Swiss technology company Provenance Proof have collaborated to offer retailers a tool that will trace melee stones to their original source.

The platform will provide a solution for tracking “a historically difficult-to-trace segment” throughout the pipeline, the Antwerp-based jeweler added Monday.

“Trust and transparency have never been more important to the diamond industry,” said Nishit (Bali) Parikh, managing director at Diarough. “With Provenance Proof, we are prioritizing the rising consumer demand for responsible sourcing.”

Diarough’s melee parcels will bear a nano-tracker that will provide a comprehensive profile with each stone’s origin, the company said Monday. The packages’ contents can be DNA traced with a standard PCR (polymerase chain reaction) scanner to verify the diamond’s provenance at any point in the supply chain. Additionally, secure blockchain infrastructure will permanently record each stage from mine to market, with every entry time-stamped to ensure the transparency, accountability and traceability of each stone, the companies explained.

“This innovation empowers the industry to bring transparency and accountability to a segment that has traditionally lacked both, offering assurance to suppliers, brands, and consumers alike as now even the smallest diamonds can now be uniquely linked to their source,” said Provenance Proof director Klemens Link.

The Provenance Proof traceable melee program will begin May 8.
