De Beers has chosen Botswana’s first Olympic gold medalist, Letsile Tebogo, as its global ambassador.
Tebogo will lead an initiative that honors Botswana’s diamond heritage through a collaboration that highlights both his athletic success and the transformative power of the natural diamond, the company said last week. Botswana’s partnership with De Beers has paved the way for the country’s economic development and created new opportunities in education and sports, which has helped cultivate talents like Tebogo, the miner explained. The partnership weaves together the story of his sporting achievements with that of Botswana’s development through diamonds.
“Our partnership goes beyond sport — it’s about showcasing the natural resources driving positive change in our communities and creating pathways for the next generation of Botswana champions,” Tebogo stated.
The alliance will involve a series of engagements and media activities focused on celebrating the good De Beers’ natural diamonds do, the company noted. Tebogo will star in a short film series, called Talent Unearthed, which will spotlight athletes whose success is deeply connected to Botswana, and reveal how natural diamonds have uplifted communities, in the hope of inspiring future generations of talent.
“Tebogo’s journey from Botswana to Olympic glory mirrors the transformation of natural diamonds,” said Sandrine Conseiller, CEO of De Beers Brands. “Just as diamonds are shaped by pressure and time, Tebogo’s story embodies the spirit of Botswana’s progress.”
