Thieves broke into France’s Musée Lalique on Sunday morning and stole an estimated EUR 4 million ($4.6 million) worth of jewelry.
The criminals grabbed approximately 20 jewels, news outlet France24 reported Sunday. The masked burglars broke through the doors, setting off the museum’s security system, and within a short time had stolen the jewels and escaped. Staff have identified the stolen pieces, and police are studying the CCTV footage as part of a broader investigation.
The museum, located in Wingen-sur-Moder in northeastern France, displays Art Nouveau and Art Deco jewelry and pieces from high-end glassmaker Rene Lalique, after whom the museum is named.
The site will close for several days to ensure a safe and secure reopening, according to the museum’s Instagram page.
The event happened less than a year after the jewelry heist at the Louvre museum in Paris, where thieves stole jewelry worth $102 million. Police have arrested some of the suspects, yet they have not recovered the jewels.
