Nearly all the jewels at the recent Christie’s sale in New York managed to find buyers, including a blue-diamond ring that fetched $8.8 million.
The cushion brilliant-cut, 5.72-carat, fancy-intense-blue, VVS1-clarity diamond ring, which has the potential to be internally flawless, beat its $8 million high estimate at the New York Magnificent Jewels auction, Christie’s said Wednesday. The ring’s achieved price was the second-highest for a jewel at any auction globally this year, the company noted.
The piece was one of several that soared past their top estimates at the December 10 event, which brought in a total of $49.2 million and saw 97% of lots sell.
Also on offer was the collection of interior designer and philanthropist Mica Ertegun. All 16 pieces were snapped up, exceeding expectations with a total of $2.6 million, the auction house said. The top seller from the group was a Cartier brooch that saw fierce bidding and finally went for more than nine times its high estimate.
The New York auction “was a testament to the vibrant market for jewelry of the highest caliber with singular provenance,” said Rahul Kadakia, Christie’s international head of jewelry, adding that the house was “particularly pleased” with the blue-diamond ring’s result.
Regarding Ertegun’s pieces, he continued, having them on offer was “a tribute to her brilliant eye, and we are thrilled by the exceptional outcome.”
Here are the rest of the top 10 lots from the sale:
Harry Winston created these earrings, which feature oval mixed-cut, reddish-pink Tanzanian spinels weighing 22.42 and 21.87 carats as well as oval-shaped and round diamonds. The lot scored nearly four times its $600,000 upper price at $2.2 million. Another lot by Harry Winston is this pair of earrings, which contain clusters of pear and marquise-shaped diamonds suspending two oval brilliant-cut, D-flawless diamonds weighing 10.10 and 10.08 carats. They sold for $1.9 million, above their $1.5 million high estimate. Pulling in more than nine times its top price of $150,000 was this Art Deco brooch from Cartier, circa 1914, featuring diamonds, pink tourmaline, ruby, onyx and a natural pearl. It went for $1.4 million. This oval brilliant-cut, 15.20-carat, D-flawless diamond on a ring garnered $1.4 million, exceeding its $1.3 million upper price tag. An interchangeable Ruban Mysterieux necklace from Van Cleef & Arpels swept past its $800,000 high estimate to achieve $1.4 million. The piece consists of a diamond necklace and three separate attachments: one with diamonds and rubies, one with diamonds and sapphires, and a full diamond bow tie. A cushion brilliant-cut, 20.08-carat, D-color, VS1 diamond ring fetched $945,000, within its estimated range. Nearly doubling its $500,000 high estimate, this ring with a cushion mixed-cut, 26.68-carat Ceylon sapphire and diamonds nabbed $945,000. Bringing in $882,000 against a high estimate of $650,000, this Harry Winston ring features an emerald-cut, 10.29-carat, D-flawless diamond center stone between two tapered baguette-cut diamonds.
