A number of large diamonds and colored stones surpassed their estimates at the recent Christie’s jewelry auction in Paris.
The star of the December 16 Paris Joaillerie auction was a necklace set with an octagonal, rounded corner step-cut, 12.28-carat Colombian emerald and diamond pendant. The piece, which can also be worn as a brooch, brought in EUR 604,800 ($641,890), well above its EUR 250,000 ($265,323) high estimate, Christie’s said last week.
In total, the sale garnered EUR 7.9 million ($8.3 million), with participation from bidders in 40 countries. Nearly half of the items on offer exceeded their upper estimates, Christie’s noted.

This modified lozenge brilliant-cut, 15.84-carat, F-color, SI1-clarity diamond ring from Cartier fetched EUR 567,000 ($601,723), exceeding its EUR 350,00 ($371,407) high presale price.A pear brilliant-cut, 8.59-carat, D-color, VVS1-clarity diamond pendant necklace went for EUR 441,000 ($468,010), beating its EUR 240,000 to EUR 300,000 ($254,693 to $318,349) price tag.Christie’s sold this emerald-cut, 8.01-carat, F-color, VS1-clarity diamond ring by Van Cleef & Arpels for EUR 302,400 ($320,940). It carried a presale estimate of EUR 200,000 to EUR 250,000 ($212,248 to $265,323).This brooch is set with oval and detachable drop-shaped natural pearls and old- and rose-cut diamonds. The jewel, created in 1840, brought in EUR 252,000 ($267,522), within its price range.A bracelet featuring emerald-cut 3.10- to 5.34-carat diamonds in the I- to K-color range achieved EUR 239,400 ($254,091), near its upper estimate.Beating its EUR 120,000 ($127,317) high price tag, this round brilliant-cut, 6.45-carat, H-color, VS2-clarity diamond ring sold for EUR 176,400 ($187,200).This ring features a pear-cut, 18.02-carat, M-color, SI2-clarity diamond with faint fluorescence. The gem sold for EUR 176,400 ($187,200), smashing its EUR 150,000 ($159,124) high estimate.An oval-shaped, 8.89-carat, sapphire ring by Van Cleef & Arpels took the ninth spot. It went for EUR 151,200 ($160,405), above its EUR 120,000 ($127,317) upper estimate.A necklace suspending a pear brilliant-cut, 5.05-carat, D-color, VVS1-clarity diamond pendant brought in EUR 138,600 ($147,028), just above its lower price tag.
