Geodes are a prominent part of the stunning, responsibly sourced jewels this US designer creates.
Sustainability is at the core of Kimberly McDonald’s creations, which range from fine jewelry to eco-friendly clothing, accessories and home furniture. McDonald launched her eponymous brand in 2007 after having worked as a curator of private clients’ fine jewelry collections. Honoring the natural elements, her jewels are handcrafted in the United States with reclaimed gold, recycled diamonds and responsibly sourced gemstones. She created the one-of-a-kind diamond-embellished ring that former US First Lady Michelle Obama wore to the Second Inaugural Ball, and the piece is now part of the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. Here, the designer shares her thoughts on the geodes that feature prominently in her jewelry.
Can you tell us more about geodes?
Inspirationally, they are a microcosm of pure earth energy, and I am forever fascinated by the fact that no two are the same. Physically, they are crystal structures formed over millions of years, and there is no 100% proven theory of how they are formed, so to me they are miracles.
How do you find them?
I am fortunate enough to have a deep-seated, over-a-decade-long relationship with the miner who owns the property where these geodes are found. I am aware this is the best quality on the planet; I only buy from one source, and I seek out the best source.
Do they have different meanings?
Some people believe that different varieties of stones, including geodes, possess meanings [or] “powers.” I am not one of those people. Quartz is a proven transducer of energy — we use it in technology, and it is very scientific. It carries with it the purest form of raw earth energy. Geodes do not possess a brain, therefore cannot process energy. They simply magnify and intensify the real energy around them.
How do you make their distinct beauty stand out in your creations?
A friend of mine recently said that I work in collaboration with nature, and I find that to be very true.
What is your favorite jewel featuring geodes?
My signature one-of-a-kind geode and rose-cut diamond cuff set in 18-karat yellow gold.
How do you source the reclaimed gold and recycled diamonds for your collections?
The manufacturers that I work with all know that I have a standing order of repurposed materials at all times. If those materials are available, that is what is used.
