Sotheby’s will showcase a JAR ring from Pauline Karpidas’s personal jewelry collection at an upcoming New York auction.
The lead piece is a JAR diamond and chalcedony ring centering a colored diamond, which appears as though trapped in ice, Sotheby’s said Friday. It will carry a $3.5 million high estimate at the December 8 Pauline Karpidas: The Jewelry Collection sale. The auction house will also open a public exhibition of her jewels on December 2.
The company will offer 70 jewels belonging to Karpidas, a philanthropist, socialite and wife of Greek shipping magnate Constantinos “Dinos” Karpidas. These include pieces from famous designers such as Suzanne Belperron, Boucheron, Van Cleef & Arpels, and Bulgari.
Notable items from the collection include three JAR pieces. One is a diamond and basalt ring from 1990 with an upper estimate of $650,000. A sapphire and platinum ring has a price range of $300,000 to $500,000, while a floral pendant necklace featuring precious metal and gemstones bears an upper price of $350,000.
Also going under the hammer are a Cartier bracelet circa 1925 featuring diamonds, emeralds and onyx, and a JAR necklace sporting padlock-shaped pendants with sapphires and diamonds that resemble stylized hearts when viewed from an angle. Both are predicted to fetch between $200,000 and $300,000. Meanwhile, an aquamarine and diamond necklace that can also be worn as a brooch, from Suzanne Belperron, has a top price of $250,000.
