Gemfields’ latest auction for commercial-quality rough emeralds from its Kagem mine in Zambia recorded higher prices than at the previous sale.
The company generated $29.6 million from 44 lots, as 100% of the emeralds found buyers, Gemfields said last week. The auction took place online – with viewings in Jaipur, India – between August 24 and September 10.
In total, the miner sold 3 million carats of emeralds at an average price of $10 per carat, up from $7 in December of last year and more than double since 2024.
“It has been nine months since our last commercial-quality emerald auction, and I am particularly encouraged by this robust result. Viewing activity in Jaipur was intense throughout the auction, reflecting a high level of customer engagement, with very positive feedback regarding both the quality of the emeralds and the composition of the lots offered,” said Adrian Banks, Gemfields’ managing director of product and sales. “This result demonstrates continued strong demand for commercial-quality emeralds and reflects the solid production performance delivered by Kagem over the past year.”
