Two blue diamonds will go up for auction at an upcoming jewelry sale at Christie’s in New York, with each set to fetch up to $8.5 million.
The Azure Blue, a pear-shaped, 31.62-carat, internally flawless diamond, is the largest of its hue ever offered at auction, Christie’s said Wednesday. The diamond is remarkable for its evenness of color, the auction house added.
The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) graded the stone as one of the most notable fancy-blue diamonds to come to market in recent years. The stone will be one of two blue diamonds leading the June 9 Magnificent Jewels sale.
“The Azure Blue is a truly rare masterpiece,” said Claibourne Poindexter, the auction house’s head of jewelry for the Americas region. “Fancy-blue diamonds of this caliber are extraordinarily scarce, and stones that combine such depth of hue with a weight of 31.62 carats are virtually never seen on the market. As the largest fancy-blue diamond ever to be offered at auction, it marks a significant moment for collectors and for the field of colored diamonds. With its striking color, exceptional size, and refined pear‑shaped silhouette, Christie’s is honored to present this exceptional gem to a new generation of connoisseurs this June.”
Another highlight of the sale is a ring bearing a 5.04-carat, fancy-vivid-blue diamond, which also has an upper estimate of $8.5 million. The marquise modified brilliant-cut, VVS2-clarity, potentially internally flawless, type IIb stone sits between two tapered baguette-cut diamonds.
