Social Responsibility

Our goal is to identify and certify diamonds, gems, and jewelry products that make the world a better place. We do this by applying and certifying auditable social responsibility standards.
“There is a reason G-D gave diamonds to the poorest people in the world and made the richest desire them. Bridging this gap is why the jewelry industry exists. It is ‘Tikkun Olam’ – fixing the world. There is more to the jewelry business than making money.”

Martin Rapaport, Chairman, Rapaport Group

Rapaport Social Responsibility Conference 2024

Leaders from across the diamond and jewelry industry gathered at the Rapaport Social Responsibility Conference to discuss key issues in ethics and transparency.

Fair Trade

We are a value-based organization that believes that business is about creating a better world – not just making money. Rapaport works within the diamond industry to create a safer and cleaner diamond supply chain. We work with people in mining, cutting and polishing, retail, and with consumers to understand all their stories and make their voices heard.

What is Fair Trade?

At Rapaport, fair trade means a product which has met the following four conditions: Fair Wages, Community Benefit, Do No Harm, and Monitoring. The process of meeting these conditions isn’t so simple

Moral Clarity and the Diamond Industry

We in the diamond industry must take personal responsibility for the consequences of our business decisions.

The Peace Diamond

The Peace Diamond, a 709-carat diamond, was unearthed in Sierra Leone, on march 13, 2017. The government of Sierra Leone appointed the Rapaport Group as the marketing and sales agent for the Peace diamond on October 2, 2017.

Instructions were given that the diamond was to be sold in a transparent and competitive auction process that will ensure fair market value. Due to the significant benefit the Peace Diamond will bring to the people of Sierra Leone and to encourage legitimate artisanal diamond distribution channels, the Rapaport Group has agreed to provide our marketing and auction services for the Peace Diamond free of all charges.

Source Certification

RapNet is excited to be working with Tracr to bring to our members tech-verified source information traced from the mine to the polished. This couldn’t come at a better time as the diamond trading community needs the ability to trade diamonds with confidence in the shifting legal and sanctions landscapeAs the G7 nations begin implementing tighter provenance requirements, RapNet is at the forefront of ensuring our members can trade diamonds with confidence.”

Do Consumers Care About Diamond Origin?

One of the ongoing questions in the diamond industry is whether shoppers care about the source of the stones they buy. For Olivia Landau, CEO of online natural-diamond retailer The Clear Cut, the problem is more fundamental.

Transparency

The Rapaport Group is a primary advocate of free, fair, efficient and competitive diamond markets. Martin Rapaport played an integral part in the establishment of the Kimberley Process. He is a strong advocate of diamonds for development, an ethical diamond trade, and the establishment of a Fair Trade Jewelry sector that will improve the lives of millions of impoverished artisanal diggers, diamond cutters and jewelry makers.

Rapaport Trade Mission to Sierra Leone

The Rapaport Trade Missions to Sierra Leone provides an opportunity for members of the diamond and jewelry trade to meet and interact with artisanal miners. Martin Rapaport, chairman of the Rapaport Group, will head the mission

US Sanctions

The Rapaport Group supports efforts by the US government to reduce Russia’s revenue from the sale of diamonds. On May 7, 2022, we updated our RapNet trading rules and client agreements, prohibiting the listing of “Russian Source” diamonds even if manufactured outside of Russia. We also ceased providing price and information services to Russia.
