Qatar will launch a new diamond and gem conference as it works to integrate into the industry.
The Doha International Diamond & Gem Conference, which will take place from January 29 to 31, will propose and discuss out-of-the-box strategies to develop, advance and grow the colored-gemstone industry, to help ensure its sustainability and profitability throughout the supply chain, the organizer said Sunday.
“The conference endeavors to be different from other global industry events staged over the past few years,” said Alex Popov, chair of the organizing committee. “We are fully aware of the recent structural changes that have taken place throughout the diamond and gemstone supply chain. In addition, consumer preferences and behavior also have significantly shifted.”
The move follows Qatar’s admission to the Kimberley Process in 2021, and is part of its attempt to integrate into the diamond industry.
“This conference is an excellent opportunity for foreign stakeholders to meet and know the Qataris and for Qataris to learn and define its role in the supply chain for the benefit of all,” Popov explained.
The event will feature prominent guest speakers including Ahmed Bin Sulayem, executive chairman of the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC), Vipul Shah, chairman of India’s Gem & Jewelry Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), and Bogolo Kenewendo, Botswana’s new minister of minerals and energy. Executives from De Beers, the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), and the World Diamond Council (WDC) will also participate in the conference.
