Gem dealer and author Benjamin Zucker reminisces about his rich professional journey – the extraordinary stones, illustrious publications and meaningful relationships.
When Benjamin Zucker looks at a stone, he thinks about how its color resembles a specific hue in a painting. It’s this artistic approach that has directed his career since it began the early 1970s. Born into a family of gem dealers, Zucker has established himself as a scholar and reputed collector of antique diamonds and jewels.
His books — including How to Buy and Sell Gems: Everyone’s Guide to Rubies, Sapphires, Emeralds, and Diamonds and Gems and Jewels: A Connoisseur’s Guide — encapsulate his vision of making gemstones accessible to the wider public. Also under his belt is a biography of famed collector and Yale University namesake Elihu Yale, which Zucker coauthored with jewelry historian Diana Scarisbrick.
In this Jewelry Connoisseur Podcast installment — the last one this season — Zucker shares memories of family and friendship that form the tapestry of a life filled with gems and stories. He also shares some of his books, which viewers can see in the video recording on our @rapaportjewelrypro YouTube channel.
