Sotheby’s has hired James Marks for a newly created position in its watches department, beginning June 1.
In the newly created role, global head of private sales and retail in the watches section, Marks will steer the continued growth of the auction house’s global timepieces department. He will focus on expanding its fixed-price and private sales business, strengthening supplier relationships and enhancing the client experience across physical and digital channels, Sotheby’s said Monday. Marks will be based in Geneva, where he will work with the company’s established global watch team, with Sam Hines, chairman of watches, and Geoff Hess, global head of watches, at the helm.
Marks was most recently CEO of watch brand Biver. He also served for six years at Phillips as deputy chairman of the watches division and international head of Phillips Perpetual. Notably, he directed global strategy across both auction and e-commerce platforms, achieving several world-record auction results while driving the expansion of retail and Perpetual boutiques in the UK, Hong Kong, and Switzerland.
Describing him as a “seasoned leader with a truly global perspective,” Josh Pullan, global head of the luxury division at Sotheby’s, said that Marks’s experience in auctions, retail, and digital innovation made him well-positioned to “build on the [department’s] strong foundations” and take it to “the next level.” “His entrepreneurial spirit and track record of building successful, innovative business is perfectly suited to our growth mindset and ambition,” he added.
