What’s So Special About Superdeep Diamonds?

Superdeep diamonds were the topic of the latest GEMTalks episode, in which expert Dr. Evan Smith from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) shared his insights.

Diamonds that formed more than 300 kilometers beneath the earth’s surface account for “some of the biggest and best diamonds out there,” Dr. Smith, senior research scientist at the GIA in New York, said on Rapaport’s LinkedIn Live last week. These include the Cullinan Diamond and the Hope Diamond.

Entitled “Secrets of Deep Diamonds,” the GIA-sponsored session featured a presentation on the formation of diamonds and how the industry can capitalize on their story, including their age and the depth at which they came into being.

“Diamonds are unexpected creations, a product of our dynamic planet, and they reflect the very processes that make earth so special,” the gemologist said.

He also took questions from the audience, with moderation by Joshua Freedman, senior analyst at Rapaport.
