Greg Katz, managing partner of South Africa-based diamond dealer and manufacturer Trigon Adamas, came on the Rapaport Diamond Podcast to recount his experiences working on exceptional stones.
Specializing in large diamonds with fancy colors and shapes, Trigon Adamas partners on rough stones with Switzerland-headquartered luxury jeweler Mouawad, which owns a majority stake in the company.
Examples include a 141-carat, yellow rough that his team turned into a round brilliant, 67-carat, fancy-vivid-yellow diamond — a rarity given that polishers prefer making fancy shapes for that color.
Speaking with Rapaport’s Joshua Freedman on September 9, Katz also explained why South Africa’s mining industry had dwindled, why 10- to 30-carat diamonds had held up reasonably well during the market downturn, and why the company was not exposed to the US tariff challenges.
