A sapphire and diamond brooch was among the many items that beat their upper presale prices at a recent Christie’s sale in London, bringing in GBP 378,000 ($480,044).
The piece, which can also be worn as a pendant, contains an oval-cut, 30.95-carat Sri Lankan sapphire with a diamond surround, Christie’s said last week. Created circa 1910, it was the top item at the November 15 to 29 Christie’s Jewels Online: The London Edit sale, where it was estimated to fetch up to GBP 90,000 ($114,323).
In total, the auction garnered GBP 4 million ($5.1 million), with 216 lots on offer. Those included several pieces that went for well past the high end of their price range, including a diamond brooch designed by Garrard around 1960, which was from the collection of Princess Margaret, countess of Snowdon. It sold for GBP 37,800 ($48,023), nearly five times its GBP 8,000 ($10,164) upper estimate.
