Diamonds Do Good (DDG) has allotted $300,000 in grants for the year to beneficiaries in diamond-mining and manufacturing communities in Africa, Canada and India.

The grants are set to support girls’ education, entrepreneurship, youth empowerment and higher education opportunities, DDG said Monday. In Africa, the grants will provide education for girls in Tanzania, through the Flaviana Matata Foundation. They will also be invested in youth afflicted with HIV through Sentebale in Botswana.

Technical-training scholarships for diamond-industry jobs and entrepreneurship studies will be given to Indigenous youth in the Northwest Territories of Canada through the Mine Training Society.

Meanwhile, DDG will expand its reach to India for the first time, to support projects related to the natural-diamond and jewelry industry. The organization will also provide funds for higher education through Veerayatan, based in western Gujarat.

“These grants will help promote meaningful change for communities where natural diamonds are mined, cut, polished and sold, and gives industry members a purpose-driven message to share with consumers,” said DDG executive director Nancy Orem Lyman.

DDG, founded in 2007 as the Diamond Empowerment Fund, supports initiatives to help people in countries with significant economic dependence on the diamond trade.
