Sotheby’s will showcase a Fabergé necklace with a high estimate of $600,000 at its upcoming sale in New York.
The jewel, which features diamonds and aquamarines, will lead the inaugural Artistic Luxury auction on June 17, Sotheby’s said Tuesday. The Imperial Cabinet presented the piece to Empress Alexandra Feodorovna during the reign of Emperor Nicholas II in May 1911. It was among several items suggested as a gift for the state visit of German Crown Prince Friedrich and Crown Princess Cecilie to St. Petersburg.
Also on offer will be two silver and diamond-set flower dress trimmings from around 1780, which have an upper estimate of $80,000. Featuring old-cut diamonds from the Russian Crown Jewels, they date back to Catherine the Great, who ruled Russia between 1762 and 1796. A further two silver and diamond-set flowers, also bearing old-cut diamonds from the Russian Crown Jewels, have a high estimate of $50,000 and $60,000.
Alongside those is a similar item dated to around 1750, from the reign of Empress Elizabeth Petrova, Catherine’s predecessor. It comprises Ceylon sapphires mounted in gold foil with diamonds, designed as a spray of wheat and cornflowers. It has a high price of $60,000.
“Our hope with the inaugural Artistic Luxury sale is to showcase the beautiful marriage between luxury and artistry — whether in gold, silver, or ceramic — and there is no better moment to bring these to market than during Luxury Week, which already unites our clients with the finest examples in watches, jewelry, handbags and beyond,” said Helen Culver Smith, global head of Fabergé and Russian works of art at Sotheby’s.
The auction house will exhibit the jewels in New York from June 11 to 16.
