A Patek Philippe Sky Moon Tourbillon watch led a recent Christie’s sale in Hong Kong, where it went under the hammer for HKD 14.2 million ($1.8 million).
The timepiece features a double-dial with 12 complications, including perpetual calendar with retrograde date, moon age and angular motion, sidereal time, and sky chart. It sold in the middle of its presale estimates at the May 27 to 28 Important Watches auction, Christie’s said last week. The sale featured three private collections: The Eternity, The Chronicle, and Kronos: Titans of Time.
Meanwhile, an F.P. Journe watch with resonance-controlled twin independent gear-train movement and power reserve passed its high estimate and brought in HKD 12.1 million ($1.5 million), scoring a world record for an F.P. Journe Black Label Parking Meter model. A Greubel Forsey, Philippe Dufour and Michel Boulanger timepiece — a rare 18-karat white gold semi-skeletonized tourbillon watch — also beat its high price, realizing HKD 11.9 million ($1.5 million), a Christie’s record for this model.
Other notable wristwatches included a rare F.P Journe with an 18-karat pink gold dial that sold for HKD 11.4 million ($1.5 million), above its high estimate. A Patek Philippe platinum cushion-shaped wristwatch with moon phases, day/night, leap year indication and breguet numerals achieved HKD 7 million ($891,393), just missing its high estimate, but setting a world record for the model.
In total, the sale garnered HKD 279.5 million ($35.6 million). The three private collections sold 100% of their lots. Christie’s also established six world auction records at the sale.
The auction drew participation from 45 countries across six continents. Millennials and younger generations made up 47% of new buyers, with nearly half of all purchases completed online.
